Today was my
last day in Norway and I’m a bit sad to leave. We’ve just pulled away from the
dock and as we pass by the coast and all the little outcrop islands and the city
of Oslo has disappeared into the rest of the landscape I realize just how much
of Norway I didn’t get to see. I mean there’s only so much a person can see in
one day, and the fact that we only had a day and a half in Oslo is not exactly
conducive to making day-long plans.
Emily and I went out on our own
today since Sidney was on a field program. So, after eating lunch, we got off
the ship and headed in the opposite direction of the main part of town. We went
into the Fortress across from the ship and walked around a little inside.
Mostly though, we goofed around by the cannons and took ridiculous photos. We
left the fortress many pictures later and headed toward our main destination:
The Norwegian National Opera and Ballet building. What’s special about this
building is that it’s built in a way that lets people walk up the incline of the
side of the building up to the roof. This is unique to all the opera and ballet
buildings I’ve ever seen.
Next, we wandered in the general
direction of the ship, but before I forget, we walked alongside the docks to
get to the Opera and got ice cream. I got a banana chocolate-chip milkshake—and
as wonderful as that ice cream flavor sounded to me, the milkshake was just as
incredible. Yum. And the guy at the cash register was a beautiful Norwegian man
who I may or may not have taken a picture of while Emily was paying… Anyway, on
the way back to the ship we walked down a lot of empty streets under
construction. We somehow happened to make our way back to where Sidney and I
ate our dinner last night and that same Asian kid was there again! He must have
really liked the food, Norwegian or not. Then we went souvenir shopping and I
promise I didn’t just buy things for
me.
I really do want to come back here
though. And as I watch people waving from their sail boats and speed boats off
the coast of Norway as we head towards Russia, I really am so grateful to be
here. Thanks Mom and Dad, for helping me make this happen, because this is one
of the greatest experiences of my life!
